Una feria en (la) cuarentena
Maribel López supera la «incubación» de su primera edición al mando de ARCO, a pesar del coronavirus (ya veremos en qué queda Lisboa), y la febrícula de la sentencia judicial
Sobrevivimos a ARCO. A pesar del coronavirus, que a punto estuvo de enfangarlo todo. De hecho, se cargó el Mobile, se cargó los carnavales de Venecia y se ha cargado la feria del turismo de Berlín.
Es como si los del mundo del arte estuviéramos hechos de otra pasta. La falta de sustento (de los artistas, más que de los grandes collectors) le hace a uno resistente. Y no será porque no hemos puesto a prueba la recomendación de la OMS de no besarnos o darnos apretones de mano estos días. Eso, en la Semana del Arte de Madrid era casi como pedirle a un penitente que se vaya al Caribe en Semana Santa. Alguna mascarilla vimos estos días por Ifema, pero nada que no aportara el punto esnob y petardo al asunto.
Superó Maribel López la «incubación» de su primera edición como directora. Y ni sarpullidos, ni toses secas. Si acaso, la febrícula de la sentencia judicial, que ya ha obligado a tomar medidas. De momento, la demanda de My Name’s Lolita prosperó. Y hay otra en marcha de la galería Trinta. O se toma la feria todo esto con seriedad o los casos se empezarán a reproducir en cascada como los de la gripe asiática (como se diseminan por el mundo los caramelos o pósters de Gonzalez-Torres). Hay incluso quienes esperan al otro lado de la puerta esgrimiendo los argumentos de la paridad y las buenas prácticas. El nuevo IAC amenaza con presentar batalla. Que ya son muchos años de cabreo.
En cuanto al salón, sí que hay «órganos» que muestran síntomas de fatiga. El transplante del concepto «futuro» al del concepto «tiempo» (by Felix Gonzalez-Torres) no funciona. Tampoco sectores como Diálogos. Mucho gafapastismo para hablar otra vez de «solo-duismos». Que la feria se llene de pintura, no sé si es bueno. Si que los grandes precios de los que se habla sean de señoros (más que de señoras) muertos –Tàpies, Picassos, Chillidas y similares– dice mucho sobre lo de su coletilla de «contemporánea». Que ARCO siga sin dar cifras (de gastos, de ingresos, de ventas…) no es en absoluto positivo si lo que defendemos es la transparencia. Y la defensa de lo público.
La feria madrileña entra el año que viene en la cuarentena. Y de momento lo hace sin plan B. Chile le ha dicho que no. La internacionalización se frena. En tiempo de virus con o sin corona, hay que ser cautos. Ya veremos si llegamos a Lisboa, pero, de momento, el 40 cumpleaños debería dar pie no tanto a tirar fuegos artificiales o a recapitular festivamente como a reformatear muchas cosas. A eliminar vicios y tomarse las cosas (más) en serio. Mirarse el ombligo, en ocasiones, es hasta positivo. Y quizás por una vez España sea de verdad el país invitado, al que muchos llevamos tiempo echando en falta.

A fair in quarantine
We survived ARCO. In spite of the coronavirus, which was on the verge of cocking everything up. In fact, it did end up ruining the Mobile World Congress, the Venice carnival and the ITB travel fair in Berlin.
It’s as though those of us in the art world were cut from a different cloth. The lack of sustenance (I’m talking about the artists, not the big collectors) makes us resistant. And it won’t be because we didn’t put the WHO guidelines not to shake hands or kiss cheeks to the test. During Madrid Art Week, that was almost like asking a penitent to go the Caribbean during Easter. We saw a few masks at Ifema, but nothing that would put a damper on things.
Maribel López survived the ‘incubation’ of her first edition as director. There were no rashes or dry coughs. At most, the feverishness of the court judgment ordering measures to be taken. For now, the lawsuit filed by My Name’s Lolita has been successful. And another one filed by the Trinta gallery is underway. The fair needs to take all of this seriously or we will see cases multiplying like the coronavirus –like Gonzalez-Torres’ candies or posters spread in the world– . There are even people waiting on the other side of the door spouting arguments about equality and good practices. The new IAC is threatening to go into battle, after many years of tension.
With regard to ARCO itself, some ‘organs’ are showing symptoms of fatigue. The transplant of the concept of ‘future’ to the concept of ‘time’ (by Felix Gonzalez-Torres) didn’t work. Neither do sectors like “Opening”. A lot of pseudo-intellectuals talking yet again about ‘solo-duisms’. I’m not sure whether the dominance of painting at the fair is a good thing. The fact that the big, expensive artworks being talked about are by dead men (rather than women) like Tàpies, Picasso or Chillida, says a lot about the ‘contemporary’ tagline. ARCO has still not published figures (on spending, revenue, sales, etc.), something that does not bode well if transparency is what’s expected. That and defending what is public.
ARCO will enter its 40th year next year (incidentally mirroring the origins of the word quarantine). And for now, it has no plan B. Chile has already said no. Globalisation is being halted. When there’s a virus going around, corona or otherwise, we need to be wary. We’ll see whether or not we get to Lisbon, but for now, the 40th anniversary should not be the time to set off fireworks or festively recapitulate how things are going to be reformatted. What is needed is to get rid of bad habits and start taking things (more) seriously. Navel-gazing can be positive sometimes. And perhaps, for once, Spain will be the real guest country, something we have been waiting for for years.
